Friday Art Reflection – Jesus In Art 2

Today, while teaching on missional community, I showed my collection of Jesus images to the students, reflecting on what each seemed to reflect about Jesus, what the world thought of Him and what of Him they see in us. One picture which drew attention was this one- “Homeless Christ” by Deb Hoeffner. While a bit of a pretty boy, I think the quality of this painting is quite good and the message a simple, but important one.
What do you think? What does it say to you?

… slows you down, makes you think, twice. a very good twist on the “will work for …” theme. where do you find these Jamie?

Don,
Hours of searching online. I used to have hundreds saved, but I lost most of them when my old laptop died. My friend Bill has many saved at his website:

Well, my first thought was what my Mom always told me when I was little. You never know what form Jesus may be in so be generous and kind to all.
My second opinion of this is that Jesus wants to be part of our lives. He wants to work with us for our salvation. So many have ignored his presence (like many of our homeless) that he is now working with what he has. Which leads me to question. Have we ignored Jesus so much that he has been reduced to begging for our redemption? A point for myself to ponder. I think this is a powerful image.
Just my two cents.
Liz,
Both are excellent perspectives. Thank you for sharing them. I especially appreciate the idea of how Jesus allows us to limit Him by our failure to be His Body. Such grace and such responsibility.
Peace,
Jamie
Hmmm, let’s see… advertising cryptic cardboard noose; suit jacket fits a bit big hiding potential nail marks in hands… not sure what side of the resurrection this Jesus is on; tired and waiting patiently by a bloody wall… the will work for loaves and fishes thing sits funny with me… which is the beauty of art. Gets behind the rib cage and tugs a bit. jesus looks a bit like nicholas cage
kbartha,
Excellent points all! Thanks.
Peace,
Jamie
