Right on, Jamie. A variation on rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

  2. Sivin says:

This brings some needed focus on what matters, thanks!

  3. Sivin,

That is how I felt too. I don’t want to completely underplay the significance of the book/movie’s popularity, but at the same time, we need to start taking our cues from God’s heart and not pop-culture.

    Jamie,
This post made me think that USAmerican Christians have been hyped to “evangelize” around two movies–The Passion of the Christ (Mel Gibson) and The Da Vinci Code (Ron Howard). Both of these in the context of “intertainment.” Your blog reminds of ‘real life” where the Gospel of the kingdom of God makes a life and death difference. Thanks!

  5. John,I didn’t want to come across as “righteous”, but I have been frustrated with how commercialized culture yanks our chain where ever they want. Thanks!Peace,Jamie

It’s an interesting relationship, that between Christianity and pop culture. There’s a great article in May 22′s issue of The New Yorker about how, essentially, Sony Pictures diverted the Christians’ ire from protests and boycotts into critical discussion (which, of course, still kept people going to see the movie). (HOLLYWOOD HERESY: Marketing “The Da Vinci Code” to Christians.)

It seems to show that no matter what a force that Christiany is in the United States, it can still be co-opted by an even greater juggernaut: Hollywood.

  7. Justin,

Thanks for the link to the article and for stopping by. Sadly, pop culture ability to turn the head of the (North) American church speaks volumes as to where influence and authority lies in our culture.

    Peace,
    Jamie

Not unlike the days of the Roman Empire- bread and circuses.

People often say “Whats a sinner(non christian)supposed to act like?”… Of course they say and do things that we (Gods people) don’t always approve of. Incase this isn’t clear I am agreeing with you…we need perspective.

    John 15
18If the people of this world [b] hate you, just remember that they hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, its people would love you. But you don’t belong to the world. I have chosen you to leave the world behind, and that is why its people hate you. 20Remember how I told you that servants are not greater than their master. So if people mistreat me, they will mistreat you.

  10. Dana, well said.Peace,Jamie

  11. Thanks, Randy. Food for thought.Peace,Jamie
