People Formerly Known As The Congregation & The Underlying Issues

With the busyness of getting our team off to Uganda this week, I have not been able to post as frequently as I would have like.  So, while it is later than I had hoped, I wanted to bring your attention to recent, provocative post by Bill Kinnon entitled "The People Formerly Known As The Congregation".  It is something of a manifesto, a challenge that is less of a gauntlet thrown at the feet of Western church culture than a prophetic call for change.  Before you read on, I encourage you to go and read it for yourself.

Bill wisely identified the piece as a polemic.  The very real and personal edge to the words reflect what so many have experienced from the larger church culture- disappointment, discouragement and hurt.  At first I felt the piece was too negative, painting with too broad of strokes.  However, with time I am less inclined to make that critique.  While it is sharper than I would have written it, I also acknowledge that I have had the grace and privilege to be spared much of what Bill (and others who resonate with him) have had to experience.  In that respect, I believe it is important to hear and acknowledge.  In an update, Bill pointed to Emerging Grace's post "The Underlying Issues" which is an excellent addition to his thoughts.  Check it out as well.

I am inspired and moved by these posts.  I hope to post something more about this very soon.  Thanks Bill & Grace!

3 - I can id with disappointment in the church. We do need some jarring here and there in maybe prophetic ways as this may come across.

One thing needed above all is openness to be willing to move away from the idea that this is the way it's always been done, and if it was good enough for them, it's good enough for me/us. We need to see the gospel lived out in different ways, because it is far richer than we realize in how it brings in God's new creation in Jesus into this world, I think. (Comment this)
